Russia’s war on Ukraine has resulted in a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. More than four million people have already become refugees, fleeing bombardment and ground warfare and seeking safety and shelter. The U.N. has estimated that ten million people will be displaced as a result of the war.

For generous people who want to help, a number of resources are available to assist in directing donations to where they will be most helpful and effective.

The Center for Disaster Philanthropy provides analysis, updates and suggestions for giving to meet both critical and ongoing needs for people affected by the war. Its Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Recovery Fund will focus on addressing humanitarian needs that arise, particularly among the most vulnerable displaced peoples and refugees.

The Council on Foundations offers a recorded webinar on philanthropic response to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, as well as a host of resources and list of response funds created to help.

In addition, here are a number of direct giving opportunities to help the people of Ukraine:

International Rescue Committee

The International Rescue Committee has a long history of working in refugee relief and in providing efficient, targeted help for refugees. In Ukraine, they are working with local partners to provide emergency assistance to people displaced from their homes, including supporting evacuation efforts, delivering basic necessities, offering psychological care through a hotline and providing information on housing, jobs and refugee rights. IRC is also on the ground in Poland, working through partners to provide support to refugees, families hosting refugees and government refugee reception centers.

Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund – GlobalGiving

GlobalGiving has direct relationships with Ukrainian organizations deeply rooted in local communities that are in the best position to provide long-term support for survivors of conflicts like these. By funding the relief efforts of local organizations, donations to this fund have the potential to build stronger response capacity so that these organizations are better equipped to face future challenges. GlobalGiving is working with 40 projects/partners to provide support for humanitarian relief efforts, relocation, medical care, and basic necessities. They have been quick and responsive in getting resources to local non-profits via the Ukrainian Crisis Relief Fund.

Direct Relief

Direct Relief provides humanitarian support to several healthcare organizations in the country including providing IV fluids, antibiotics, medications for anesthesia, sutures, and cardiovascular drugs. Initial shipments were delivered beginning the first week of the conflict to organizations in Ukraine.

Global Fund for Children

Global Fund for Children is working with local partners to provide food, warm clothing, fuel, and safe shelter to children and families under attack in Ukraine and to refugees fleeing the country. Support will help distribute meals, provide emergency trauma support, sleeping bags, winter clothes, medicine and critical supplies.

CARE

CARE’s Ukraine Crisis Fund supports the organization’s goal to reach four million people with immediate aid and recovery help, including food, water, hygiene kits, psychosocial support and cash assistance – prioritizing women and girls, families and the elderly.

The Charitable Foundation has created and maintains this page of resources to help connect generous people with the most effective ways to give to help victims of crises and disasters locally and around the world.
